◇ Services for Publishers Entering China

Book industry in China has experienced unprecedented growth since the country started reform and opened up to the outside world—especially in the past decade. In the future the opportunity to sell books and copyrights into the market will increasingly depend upon a willingness of publishers to buy as well. Also there is a huge treasure trove of content in China, which can be transferred to Western markets. There is every reason to believe Western publishers can have a share of the success, but, as in any market, you will only do that with the benefit of the right market data.

OpenBook is more than bestseller charts providing the foreign publishers with a variety of products. For example:

◇  Chinese book industry yearly report
       ◇  Annual bestseller charts
◇  Lifetime sales for a title, author
       ◇  Category overview

OpenBook’s reports allow Western publishers to:

Understand the profile of Chinese book retail market. E.g. What is the size and the growing speed of the overall China retail book market? What is the seasonality? What is the average cover price and the average selling price? How many new titles come into the market every month? How many publishers compete in one certain field?

Track shifts in genres within the Chinese retail market. E.g. What is the size of the book market by genre or sub-category? And how has each market changed in the past few years? Expanding or shrinking? How many publishers compete in one certain field? Where is the market blank?

Monitor realistic sales of each active titles and act as a basis for selling copy rights to Chinese partners. E.g. When does the Chinese edition of my copyright come into the market? Now the title is moving up the chart quickly, does the publisher has enough stock to meet the demand? Is reprint required?
